The Ashwardens

Faction: Adeptus Astartes — Ultramarines and Salamanders

Commander: Captain Caius, formerly of the Ultramarines 9th Company

Overview

The Ashwardens were forged in the ruined settlements and burning battlefields of Vallus Abitum, where Ultramarines and Salamanders fought together against an Ork invasion. The survivors emerged as a single brotherhood under Captain Caius. The inhabitants of Vallus Abitum came to know the warriors as the Ashwardens, for the ashes that coated their armour after friend and foe alike had perished in the flames of war. Granted permission to remain together, they retain their parent Chapters’ heraldry and traditions while fighting as one company. Many now wear black armour, as a perpetual reminder of the ash that coated the survivors of the Ork invasion.

Ultramarines discipline directs the advance; Salamanders flame clears the enemy from its strongholds. The Ashwardens excel in defensive warfare, urban fighting and close-quarters assaults, but their defining conviction reaches beyond battlefield doctrine: humanity can only be safe when its enemies are utterly destroyed. Their compassion remains sincere. Their willingness to sacrifice those they protect has become equally firm.

Command

Captain Caius, the Ash-Bound, was originally an Ultramarine sergeant who fought alongside Agatone during the Octarius campaign. At Broken Ridge, bonds of brotherhood were forged that would outlast the war. His battlefield promotion by Captain Adrax Agatone placed the surviving warriors of both Chapters under his command. The Ultramarines subsequently recognised the appointment, although its circumstances and the company’s unusual composition continue to attract criticism. Though his gene-seed remains that of Roboute Guilliman, he is regarded as an honorary son of Vulkan, retaining a single blue shoulder plate in recognition of his origins.

Caius regards the protection of Imperial citizens as inseparable from his duty, but Vallus Abitum has convinced him that lasting protection demands the uncompromising destruction of the enemy. He is ready to sacrifice innocent lives if he considers that destruction to require it.

Purpose at Vandros

The Ashwardens have come to Vandros following rumours of the Ork Warboss Krugdreg. They entered the Vandros Corridor seeking repairs at Crown Dockyards and replenishment of their depleted munitions at Kharon Bastion. Caius intends to equip himself to finish the Ork before Krugdreg can build another force capable of devastating Imperial worlds.

The hunt brings them into a system whose divided commanders and threatened supply routes offer precisely the opportunities an Ork warlord requires. Alongside their pursuit, the Ashwardens seek to preserve the Corridor’s essential infrastructure and deny all xenos a lasting foothold. Pelagos is a particular concern: its agricultural production sustains Vandros Primus, and its devastation would repeat horrors they have already witnessed. Neither the succession dispute nor the objections of Imperial commanders will readily divert Caius from his quarry.

Current Stance

The Ashwardens profess loyalty to the Imperium rather than either succession claimant. They regard the crisis chiefly through its consequences for the war against the xenos. If rival authorities leave Krugdreg free to gather strength, Caius may conclude that the quickest means of restoring Imperial security is to end their fighting by force.

Their relationship with the Ultramarines is strained by suspicion over the company’s mixed composition, unusual promotion of its commander and continued independence. Formal recognition of Caius’s rank has not secured unquestioned acceptance of his authority. An attempt to subordinate, divide or restrain the Ashwardens could bring them into direct conflict with their own Chapter’s forces, particularly if Caius believes it would allow his quarry to escape.

Cooperation with the Imperial Guard remains possible wherever objectives coincide, but shared allegiance offers no guarantee of protection. The Ashwardens are prepared to sacrifice Guard formations to destroy a xenos threat, or attack them outright if they obstruct the campaign. Should Caius judge the succession war an intolerable distraction, troops fighting for either claimant could become targets: destroying an Imperial army may, in his estimation, prevent a longer war and far greater losses.

The Crimson Paladins’ declared concern for the vulnerable provides common ground, but their commitment to civilian protection may also place them in the Ashwardens’ path. Caius’s company retains the Salamanders’ devotion to humanity while increasingly treating resistance to its methods as a failure to understand what that devotion demands.

Orks receive particular hatred, with Krugdreg foremost among their enemies. The Ashwardens make little distinction between greenskins attacking Imperial worlds and those gathering strength for future aggression. Drukhari, Tyranids and other xenos warrant the same uncompromising destruction.

Chaos forces are likewise enemies to be eradicated. Caius regards those who knowingly harbour or assist them as having forfeited the Emperor’s protection, whatever their former allegiance.
